Beekeeping Beginners’ Course 2024

Our beginners’ course 2025 year will start in March. 

The dates are: 

8, 15 & 29 March, 5 & 26 April, 2025.
Last year 20 beginners completed the course and many have gone on to keep bees.

Would you like to keep bees? do you keep bees and would like to feel more confident in your beekeeping? or, would you just like to learn about bees and their fascinating lives?

The course covers:

The 3 types of honey bee and their life cycle
Keeping bees in an urban environment. 
Good beekeeping practice and how to keep healthy bees
Essential beekeeping equipment
The beekeeping year, including the season of bee forage plants 

You’ll put your knowledge into practice, observing and handling bees and using the equipment in the practical sessions. Our team of experienced beekeepers will guide you through both theoretical knowledge and hands-on sessions.

The course includes:

6 half day education sessions (tea / coffee included)
Practical demonstrations 
Hands-on experience observing and handling bees
Experienced beekeepers forming part of the larger team to help mentor beginners through their first year
Monthly education sessions
A Beekeeping Manual
Dedicated What’s App support group.
One year’s membership of HBKA
One year’s BBKA membership including monthly magazine and insurance

There is no examination, but a certificate will be awarded to all who successfully complete the course.

Subject to availability: 

  • A free starter swarm plus support installing and looking after swarm, usually between mid April to mid June.
  • Opportunity to rent hive plots on one of 4 HBKA apiaries at a nominal £10 per year.
