Harrow in Leaf - HBKA Honey Show 2018

Like last year, the Harrow in Leaf show will take place on the afternoon of the bank holiday Monday, which this year falls on 27 August 2018. It will commence at 12pm and finish at 5pm.

The show is an integral feature of the Harrow Beekeepers' Association, and the single largest event we organise. It requires a lot of work and is only possible with the help of members such as yourself, so the purpose of this email is to ask for your assistance.

At the bottom of this article there is a draft timetable, indicating how many people we need at various points during the course of the weekend. If you can help, please do get in touch with our chair Sarah James. Helping out at the show is a great way to get to know your fellow beekeepers and allows you to get more involved with the association, whilst at the same time giving back. (By volunteering you also get free entry to the show!)

Please do also consider entering - there are over 30 different categories, encompassing everything from honey and candles to cake, soap and photography. There really is something for everyone (including your non-beekeeping friends and family!):

The honey classes are also available to download from

The entry form is available to download from

Sarah and Tilman will be happy to collect entry forms at Hatch End over next few Sundays ...or they can of course be delivered direct to Judy Walker (details on the entry form). If this is a problem then let them know. If you are sending your entry in direct please make sure that you list Harrow Beekeepers on the entry form as your Society. All entries to be in by Tues 21st August 2018, late entries are accepted up until Friday 24th August 2018 but will NOT be accepted after Friday 24th, so late entries are not accepted on show day.

Also, a reminder that if you wish to sell honey at the show then, as usual, you’ll need to help out and to enter a jar of honey in the gift class (Class 147) and at least one other class in the honey section. It would be helpful if you could let us know in advance if you would like to sell your honey (or other produce).

Harrow Beekeepers' Association is a registered charity. Its stated activities include “[promoting] the craft and heritage of beekeeping by educating the public” and “[encouraging] an understanding of the benefits of our craft and the role of bees in the environment”. One of the key ways of engaging the wider public, and fulfilling the charitable role, is through the Harrow in Leaf show.

If you have any questions about volunteering, entering items for the show, or selling your honey at the show, please do not hesitate to ask next Sunday at HE or email Sarah.

Lots of volunteers are needed to help make this event a success. There are also some tasks that need doing before the BH weekend; such as organising the volunteer rota, table flower arrangements and collecting the cups and trophies from last year’s winners. So even if you’re not available over the BH weekend, you may still be able to help, so please do so please consider helping your association to make a success of this important annual event.
